Running one of her written feedback comments through Text Inspector and VocabKitchen showed C2 lexis for B2+/C1 students. Feedback students can’t read can’t be used.
Fixes
- Run comments through a text analyser; replace words above level.
- List the metalanguage in your feedback and rubrics (signposting, cohesion, hedging) and teach it.
- Reuse the same terms in model explanations so they’re met repeatedly.
- Give an example or highlight the place in the student’s text.
- Learners write an action plan from the feedback (proves comprehension).
Limits
Tools give a partial picture; CEFR labels are shaky above B2; long sentences may be the bigger barrier.
Apply in my context (Claude)
- For KET/PET learners, feedback in English needs to be A2/B1 or bilingual. A short Uzbek/Russian gloss of the criterion terms is legitimate planned L1 use.
