Harmer presents VAK learning styles as preferences and Gardner’s multiple intelligences as a reason not to label learners ‘unintelligent’. Keep the second point; drop the idea of matching teaching to a student’s style, which the research doesn’t support.

What the evidence says (Claude)

  • Meshing hypothesis (teach visual learners visually, etc.) has no good support: Pashler, McDaniel, Rohrer & Bjork (2008); Rogowsky, Calhoun & Tallal (2015).
  • Gardner himself says multiple intelligences are not learning styles (2013).
  • What does help: matching the mode to the content (pictures for concrete nouns, audio for pronunciation) and using several modes for everyone (dual coding, Paivio; Mayer).

How to talk about it in DELTA (Claude)

Preferences exist and affect motivation; using varied modes is good practice; claims that matching style to instruction improves learning are unsupported. That’s the defensible Module 1/Module 3 position.
