‘Young learners’ can mean anyone under 18, 5–12, or 8–16 in marketing. That hides big developmental differences. Name the age band and the school stage instead.
Practice
- Say “very young learners (3–6)”, “primary (6/7–11/12)”, “lower secondary”, “teens”.
- Check the local transition to secondary (11 in some systems, 14 in others).
- Plan around differences in motivation, self-esteem and discipline per band.
- A commenter suggests: pre-primary, primary, pre-teens, early teens, late teens (citing Cameron 2001; Brumfit, Moon & Tongue 1991).
Apply in my context (Claude)
Cambridge’s own labels mix bands: Starters (~7–8) and A2 Key for Schools (~11–14) are different worlds. For DELTA Module 3 and course design, specify age + school stage + exam.
