Abu Dharr r.a
A lot of religion we have today, we have them through the questions of Abu Dharr to the Prophet s.a.w that would fit us as well
Jundub ibn Janada - Jundub al-Ghfari
He was a black Arab. His tribe was Ghifari, kind of bandits. However, Abu Dharr was different. He was a serious and detached young man. He kept to himself (He was alone)
While he was in Waddan desert, he hears about the Prophet.
He talks to his brother and sends him to Mecca to bring some news about this Prophet.
When he returned, he said “I saw a man who has a noble character, who commands good, who forbids evil”. Abu Dharr asks “is that all you have?” His brother says “Yes, that’s all”
Abu Dharr says “That’s not enough for me. ” He took his waterskin and his stick.
He went to the Haram, kept drinking Zam-Zam. Then Ali r.a noticed him. Ali r.a took Abu Dharr to his home. Ali r.a didn’t ask anything. Second day went same. At the end of the day, again Ali r.a took him to his home. But next day, Ali r.a asks what Abu Dharr is here for? Abu Dharr tells everything.
Then Ali r.a says “Come with me. But along the road, if I see someone suspicious I’ll bend my shoes, you then should go past me or go another direction and disappear.”
when they entered, Abu Dharr says “Assalamu alayka ya Rosululloh”. The Prophet says “Wa alayka salam or wa layka salamulloh va rohmatullohi wa barokatuh”
Abu Dharr was the first person who said “Assalamu alayka…”
At that time, after the Prophet s.a.w presented Islam, he accepted Islam right away. Prophet s.a.w told Abu Dharr to keep his conversion secret.
Abu Dharr wants to announce his conversion publicly around the Ka’ba and he did announce it publicly first. (Ibn Mas’ud was the first to recite Qur’an publicly)
When he announced, people of Quraiysh almost beat him to death.
Then al-Abbas comes and protects him, saying to Quraish that “Think about the implications of you killing a person of Ghifari” His tribe saved him at that moment.
But the next day, he did it again. same thing happened.
After that, he goes and sees the Prophet. S.A.W sees Abu Dharr and his condition and tells “Didn’t I tell you to keep your Islam secret?” “Go back to you people and tell them what you’ve seen and heard. Call them to Allah subhana huwa ta’ala.”
He returns to his people. His brother comes first and asks what happened. His brother immediately accepted Islam. They then go to their mother. Their mother also accepts Islam.
So many people embraced Islam and Abu Dharr was Imam in the prayers.
When Muhammad s.a.w made Hijrah to Medina, Abu Dharr brings his people. He had so many people behind him embraced Islam. And the large number amazed the Prophet s.a.w
{remember: Ghifar was thief, bandit tribe - now they all embraced Islam and come to the Prophet as Muslims. That’s why never withhold Islam from anybody. You never know who is going to embrace Islam. Do not find anyone unworthy of Dawah. Everyone deserves this beautiful message and you’ll never know who is gonna come forward}
Abu Dharr was a person of Jahiliya. He didn’t get the tarbiya, he missed the mentorship of the Prophet s.a.w like other sahaba in Mecca and Darul Arqam. That’s why he got into an argument with a black man (maybe Bilal r.a) “You are a son of a black woman” That black man goes to the Prophet s.a.w. He s.a.w aks “Did you really insult this man with his mother” Abu Dharr makes tawba.
He then becomes known for freeing slaves and treating them good. Because he remembers that incident with a black man. And the Prophet s.a.w said “They are your brothers that Allah put under your command - you should feed them what you eat, dresses them what you wear and should not give them a task beyond their capacity. If you give a difficult task/job - you should help them in that task”
The Prophet s.a.w says “There’s no one more truthful that sky has ever shaded over or the Earth carried than Abu Dharr”
Because of his temperament or roughness, the Prophet s.a.w didn’t recommend him for a leadership position
Narrated by Anas r.a “One day the Prophet s.a.w met Abu Dhar and asked “Don’t you wanna know about two things which are light as a burden but heavier on the mezan (scale) than other things?”
Abu Dharr says “Of course ya Rasululloh”
Rasululloh s.a.w says “Good character (khusnul xulq) and long periods of silent”
Abu Dharr asks the Prophet s.a.w “A man loves people but he cannot keep up with them in terms of good deeds ( his good deeds are not like theirs)”. The Prophet s.a.w says to Abu Dharr “Anta ma’ man ahbabt” Abu Dharr was so pleased with the answer and says “I love Allah and his Messenger s.a.w”
Abu Dharr says “Ya Rasululloh, the Rich (sahaba) are running away with all the hasana, we don’t have the wealth they have to spend to give in charity” The Prophet s.a.w responds and He gives Abu Dharr prescription of sadaqa “To say Subhanolloh 33 times, Alhamdulillah 33times and Allahu Akbar 33 times, followed by La ilaha illalloh wahdahu la shariyka lah, lahul mulk va lahul hamd va huwa a’la kulli shayeen qodir after every prayer”
That’s the nature of Abu Dharr’s questioning “How do I keep up?”
in Tabuk, narration from ibn Mas’ud r.a, the hypocrites were exposed.
There were some people who were using excuses to not to go, dropping off. The Prophet s.a.w continues with those who stick.
When they took notes, Abu Dharr was missing. It was a little surprising. (He wasn’t a hypocrite.)
They said his camel might get slowed down. The Prophet then continues going.
indeed, his camel had become weak. Abu Dharr gets left behind. He realized the army had gotten so far ahead. He gets off of his camel, he takes his belongings. He runs towards the Prophet s.a.w and the army. Next day, this is how far he was left behind, people noticed a man coming on foot with a dust falling behind. The Prophet s.a.w at that moment said “Let it be Abu Dharr, I hope that’s Abu Dharr”
People shouted to the Prophet s.a.w “That is Abu Dharr”. He s.a.w was so happy knowing that it was Abu Dharr. And He s.a.w says “May Allah have mercy on you ey Abu Dharr, you’ll live alone - you’ll die alone and you’ll be raised alone (on the day of Judgement)” This prophecy comes true at the end his life.
Abdullah ibn Mas’ud r.a found his body stretched in the middle of nowhere (Rabatha, on the way to Iraq from Madina) they pray janaza.
