His full name is - Musab ibn Umair ibn Hoshim ibn Abdu’manaf
He is from the tribe called Bani A’bdari (the smallest and the richest tribe)
If you saw him, you’d say “He is the most handsome man I’ve ever seen”. He was extremely handsome. He had a beautiful smile. He was extremely wealthy. He was the only child of his mother Khunas bint Malik. From a father side, Umair, he had two half-brothers - Mansur ibn Umair r.a and Abu Yazid ibn Umair.
He resembled the Prophet s.a.w so much so that even in the battle of Uhud people could mistake the Prophet s.a.w and Musab, that’s how close he looked like the Prophet s.a.w
Umair was so wealthy and when he passed, Musab r.a was left the largest share of his wealth. The wealth he left with, not earned, was the half of all the wealth of all people in Mecca.
From his childhood, he used to wear very luxuriously. He wore a lot of gold, gold bracelets, gold chains and everything. He used to wear silk garmets. Of course, none of these were haram in the jahiliya. Best shoes, best clothes, best perfume.
Darul arqam
He went to Dar al-Arqa at night, tip-toing, knocking softly and entered slowly. the Prophet s.a.w was teaching and talking about al-Jannah and Narr. Rosululloh notices him but doesn’t stop talking. Musab r.a waited till the end and asked a few questions from the Prophet s.a.w and embraced Islam in his first encounter with the Prophet.
He kept it secret and private. He became an attendee of Dar al-Arqa.
One day he got caught by Uthman ibn Talha. Uthman sees him praying and goes to his mother and tells her.
His mother was so surprised and so upset. She screamed at his son, but never hit because she loved him so much. But she imprisoned him, taking everything from him. Her mother says “You’re not leaving this house until you renounce from this religion”. Musab r.a was tied up. Her mother was enhancing the deprivation of food and drink, all sorts of stuff hoping it can make his son relent however Musab r.a stays true to his faith no matter what.
He would recite the Qur’an that he learned and memorized from the Prophet s.a.w in the solitary confinements. He had a very beautiful voice. (He never yells at his mother, becomes aggressive towards her. He just waited patiently.)
He, one day, somehow hears about the Muslims are given the permission to migrate to Abu Sinya (al-Habasha). He managed to escape the house and joined the others.
At some point in Abu Sinya or shortly after that, he marries a woman by the name Hamna bint Jaxsh r. anha. (sister of Zaynab bint Jaxsh - who later becomes a wife of the Prophet s.a.w)
When he comes back to Mecca, he visits the Prophet first, not his mother.
After going to the Prophet s.a.w, then he goes to his mother. She was very emotional.
She says “You come back from Abu Sinya, even before me, you went to see this man, the Prophet s.a.w” He replies “My love for the Prophet s.a.w is greater my love for you”
She even tried hostility: “If you continue this way, wallahi, every single dirham you inherited is gone. You can’t have them. Even your cloth, your shoes and perfume will be taken from you, sold out in the market.”
Musab r.a says he is okay with that. He says “Allah has better things for me”
He had to say to his mother “Leave me alone and I’ll leave you alone” “I won’t bother you with my Islam and you won’t bother me with your shirk”
He walked out of that house with nothing.
He became a devoted student of Prophet s.a.w.
In the season of Hajj, The Prophet s.a.w used to go and meet with different groups of people with Ali r.a and Abu Bakr. r.a /
One day, they talk to 6 young men from Yathrib (Medina) and the Prophet tells them about tawhid, the Qur’an and everything. These 6 young men, they remember that people of the book, in Yathrib, the Jewish community talks about the new prophet to come and they want to be the first and beat others in becoming Muslim. they embrace Islam that night and ask the Prophet s.a.w someone to go with them to teach other people, one of His s.a.w. sahaba.
the Prophet s.a.w chooses Mus’ab r.a.
Asab ibn Zuraro will be wih him, introducing him to small groups of people.
One day, Usaid ibn Khuzair - leader of the leaders in Yathrib (later becomes r.a) comes with a spear threatening Mus’ab r.a. “What are you teaching my people?”
Mus’ab r.a says, hear me out - and if you don’t like it, I’ll obey you. I’ll leave
He then starts reciting Qur’an, telling some early messages from Allah subhana huwa ta’ala. After that Usaid ibn Khuzair embrace Islam, takes Shahada.
Then Usaid takes Musab r.a. to Sa’ad ibn Muadh (r.a) - another leader of many people, about 31 years old (36 when he was killed)
They make a scene, Usaid goes to Sa’ad ibn Muadh and asks for help. He says “there’s a guy who is teaching something to my cousin Asad ibn Zuraro” They go there, Mus’ab r.a was sitting with Asad ibn Zuraro. Sa’ad ibn Muadh immediately became angry and wanted to kill Mus’ab.
Mus’ab r.a says: “I’m just teaching some words”. Usaid says to Sa’ad, please sit and listen to him what he’s teaching. Sa’ad ibn Muadh also wnats to embrace Islam. They say take ghusl and say the Shahada.
Now, they are 3 - Mus’ab r.a, Usaid ibn Zuraro r.a and Sa’ad ibn Muadh r.a
They say, there’s one person left. If he becomes Muslim, then we’re done. All the Yathrib - Madina will become Muslim. Who is that? - Sa’ad ibn Ubada r.a
till the next Hajj - Mus’ab r.a makes the whole Madina embrace Islam and teach them what he learned from the Prophet, the early surahs and ayahs. Doing so, he also makes the people love the Prophet s.a.w even before he s.a.w comes to Medina himself.
One day, Ali ibn Abu Tolib narrates, I was sitting in a gathering with Muhammad s.a.w and Mus’ab r.a came to us with only one harsh, cheap garment/cloth. He cried remembering about his inhereted wealth, how he used to be, wear. His way from prosperity to poverty. The Prophet s.a.w says, “Oh the believers, One day you will have the goodness of this dunya as well (Mus’ab r.a didn’t live to that day) but you are now in a better condition with your relationship with Allah than you will be that day”
Badr comes, and the Prophet s.a.w announces Mus’ab r.a as a flag-bearer.
Then in the battle of Uhud, the Prophet s.a.w calls for him and hands him the flag.
What a blessing to be a flag holder for the two battles.
in Uhud, Mus’ab was killed… he was holding the flag with his right hand, they cut his right hand. Then he r.a holds the flag his left hand. they cut his left hand. he then hold the flag with both hands with what’s left. then they put the spear to his chest and he passed away.
he had nothing to cover his entire body
The Prophet s.a.w first went to Hamza r.a (his uncle) and cried over him in a way he never cried before. Next he went to Mus’ab r.a and cried over his dead body as well.
