Adding affectively engaging questions and a personal project to a coursebook reading made an A1 class more invested. The idea comes from NILE’s materials-development work on affective learning (and a Diaz Maggioli IATEFL plenary).
Sequence (A1, small group)
- Warm-up: compare where you live now with home (photos, feelings).
- Reading with bilingual dictionaries, not translation apps.
- Comprehension questions + affective ones (“Is it a good idea to build with glass and plastic? Why (not)?”).
- Describe the images; choose a favourite and justify it.
- Project: draw a building you’d like to live in (materials, size, layout) and present it. Drawing skill not judged.
Limits
Informal; the effect isn’t separated from the project.
Apply in my context (Claude)
- Easy upgrade for Kid’s Box and Prepare readings: add one “how do you feel / would you…?” question and one personal mini-project per unit. It’s the affective counterpart to Output tasks after reading boost vocabulary retention.
