A random nomination element (cards that tell the speaker who goes next or what to do) draws in reluctant speakers and curbs dominant ones in group discussion.
Procedure
- Groups of 3–5; a topic or question and a face-down card pile.
- The first speaker gives an opinion, draws a card, and follows it (e.g. “choose who speaks next”).
- Repeat. Optional: a count-out rhyme to pick the first speaker.
Source of the activity: Tekhnologic (2016). Kandybovich built a digital generator.
Limits
Anecdotal (“a real hit”).
Apply in my context (Claude)
- Solves the “male firstness” pattern noted in English in Uzbek state primary schools - Copland et al. 2024: random nomination equalises who speaks. Good for 6-B/7-D discussion tasks.
Connections
Why pairwork fails - fix the task, not the students · Question purposefully - socio-psychological vs pedagogical questions
