Highlights / notes file: The Power of Moments - Chip & Dan Heath
We remember experiences by their peak and their end (peak-end rule, duration neglect). Defining moments cluster at transitions, milestones and pits, and they can be designed. School runs like ‘nonstop practice’ with no game.
From my highlights
- Duration neglect; the peak-end rule.
- Natural defining moments: transitions, milestones, pits (hardship). Handling a pit well turns it positive.
- Students’ milestones go uncelebrated: why not a 1,000th day, a 50th book?
- A first day should be a peak, not a checklist.
- “School needs to be so much more like sports… We run school like it is nonstop practice. You never get a game.” Where’s the peak?
- When students presented real work to an audience, they never asked “how many points is this worth?”
- Raise the stakes (a performance, a deadline, a public commitment); boost sensory appeal; bad is stronger than good.
- Peaks don’t emerge naturally; they must be built, and it’s nobody’s job.
