Gabriel Diaz Maggioli (IATEFL 2017): one-size-fits-all CPD fails. His Teacher’s Choice Framework maps teachers by updated/outdated knowledge × aware/unaware, and matches each quadrant to a different development mode.
The framework (Diaz Maggioli 2004)
Two axes, knowledge (updated ↔ outdated) and awareness (aware ↔ unaware), give four quadrants. Each quadrant gets different options:
mirror coaching (a colleague takes ethnographic notes) · collaborative coaching (co-teaching) · expert coaching · study groups · critical friend teams · exploratory action research · lesson study · learning circles.
Other points
- Mentoring works best with self-selected pairs; use dialogue journals and portfolios.
- Make the case for paid CPD time.
- Self-observation (John Hughes’s “selfie” session): video or photos with one specific observation task.
Caveats
2017 talk; the framework dates from 2004; aimed largely at managers.
Apply in my context (Claude)
- This is a direct design input for the Kasbiy rivojlanish checklisti: rather than one checklist for all, branch it by quadrant, so a teacher who is aware but outdated is offered study groups, and one who is unaware is offered mirror coaching.
